Guitar Heroin(e)

Not only has Guitar Hero become an addiction for many, it has also recently grabbed my fiancée. Katie was adamantly against this game, and claimed she would never be able to play it. However, at the family Christmas, my young girl cousins begged her to play with them, and she got hooked. Tonight, she played through most of the Easy career and did a fantastic job. I couldn't be more proud of her.

Blog Naming Contest Wrapup

It is almost choosing time for a blog name, so I decided to group all of the suggested blog names.
  • "I Love My Mother" by my Mother
  • "Thoughts on a Tangent" by my Father
  • "Blog<Stolee>" by Johnson
  • "Sorry, Courtney, it's not Vegan" by Courtney
  • "____ Days and Waiting" (where ___ is the number of days till the wedding) by Katie
  • "Aftermath" by Grandpa Stolee

It I'm missing any, or you have late additions then give me a comment or an email. I am still lacking an original idea of my own, so I welcome the suggestions.

Merry Christmas

It is officially Christmas, so I hope you are having a merry one. I am up way past my bedtime, but I am just enjoying the robe and pajama pants Katie got me, enjoying them way too much. Picture to be delivered at a later date, but for now, know that it is real velour.

Cool trivia tidbit, while searching for the definition of the above, I got the pun with the above reference.

The New iPhoto

The new laptop came bundled with the new iLife, which came with a new version of iPhoto. This version came with a new feature, which became very useful when I migrated my photo library, including Japan, Africa, and Estes Park photos. The feature is "Even t Mode" where the photos are grouped into Events instead of day-by-day, so I could group all Africa photos into a single event. Here is a look at some events (click for the full window):

Events

In addition to the grouping feature, I am able to choose the picture that shows up on the event. Also, I can mouse across the picture to browse the entire event in thumbnail mode. I tried to make an animation to show this, but failed since my version of ImageReady no longer saves animations to .GIF files.

A White Nebraskristmas

Sorry for the horrible mangling of words, but I found it fitting to the subject matter. December in Lincoln had rather nice storms that brought a good amount of snow cover. Unlike previous winters, the snow has not melted immediately. It is enjoyable to see snow when it is this cold outside. The one negative is the sidewalks from my apartment to Avery are still riddled with patches of ice, so riding my bike is still an impossibility. I'm getting plenty of walking exercise, though.

Semester Completion

My first semester of graduate education has completed. Finals week was stressful only because I had to proctor a calculus exam the night before my algebra final, and then grade that calculus exam before turning my brain entirely off. Even that can only be brief, for I need to study for a qualification exam I am retaking in January. However, I'm just rushed to get things put together before leaving for Kansas City.

This is the first time I have reached a milestone such as a semester and not known what fraction of my education I have completed. As a freshman, I said, "I'm one eighth done!" Now, I have no idea if it is one eighth, tenth, twelfth, or more. It could even be less, if I don't have the chops for the advanced courses. From my vantage point, it seems that after the two levels of exams are completed the courses get less strenuous, but the other work picks up.

In order to be successful, I will need to improve my self-motivation. It's not that I'm not self-motivated to learn math, just that I need motivation to sit down and work on problems that I come up with myself and see them to completion amidst classes and teaching.

The break for the next ten days is very much needed.

Wall-E to be renamed Hipp-E?

In case you didn't see the side link for the new Wall-E trailer, the new Pixar movie seems to be moving in a very environmentalist direction. It seems the robot is tasked to clean up all the garbage on Earth, and a space ship lands pretty much on top of him. The trailer shows how he hitches a ride as the ship leaves, barging through an orbiting cloud of junk.

Clearly, this ship must be from the new colonies of humans, come back to see what has happened to the Earth they abandoned. Perhaps Wall-E's 700 years of picking up trash will help them learn that their ways still haven't changed, and there's no time like the present to be environmentally savvy.

While this is but my expectation of the film's premise, I've been known to be wrong (the Incredibles) or at least enjoy the ride (Cars) with Pixar movies.

A new top hit on Google

A search for pictures of the worst hats will get this blog as result number 4. That's a new high for unintentional searches that people have actually used to access the blog.

Weather Anomaly

A severe weather warning claimed that a quarter inch of ice followed by 2-5 inches of snow was headed for Lincoln. I decided I would be more productive in Kauffman with access to marker boards than at home. Part of this plan included possibly being stuck due to the weather. As it got later into the evening, the weather still does not seem to guarantee canceled classes tomorrow, but it is too late to go home. I'll camp out on someone's futon for the night and wake up plenty early to prepare for teaching, if I am indeed required to do so.

Contest: Rename the Blog

I'm sick of "Silly Hats Only" so I need a new name. Looking at search results that map here (particularly involved with the Futurama code or stranger things) there could be use for a more clever/purposeful/meaningful name. Let me know.

Smoking Hatred

A student of my office mate just took a smoke break between help sessions. She came back smelling so strongly of smoke I started to cough. Time to grade somewhere else!

A Terrorble Commute

This morning, I walked to campus early so I missed the firetrucks and police cars surrounding the INS building due to a mysterious white substance in an envelope. This link to the Journal Star also supplied me with a picture of my daily commute, which is presented below in case you are interested:

Commute map

If I left just a few minutes later this morning, my walk directly between the freeway ramp and the INS building would probably have been blocked, causing me to be late for class. That would have been a good excuse: "Sorry, I got held up by HazMat."

Appropriate Titles

The title of this blog is really just a random name, since I was too lazy to be creative at the time. However, this has not stopped stoleetech.com from being on the front page of a Google search for "silly hats only". Thank you Google analytics for supplying search terms that lead to my site.
