Snow Storm

Here's a picture from the snow storm this weekend. I took this soon after the rain turned into snow. The flakes were remarkably large and heavy. I also discovered how the night-mode flash works on my camera, in order to get the depth to be visible.

Not Exactly Useful

I am trying to get a floppy drive to work in Vista, so I can create a floppy disk loader for my RAID software. I need to split the disks into two separate drives again, but I can't seem to get Vista to recognize my drive. While searching for a solution, I found this:
vista is very slow
caused by incorrect drivers for floppy drive
will there not be appropriate drivers for floppy drives once vista is released
tells me to go to microsoft
none there

So Much to Say

It's been so long since my last post, and so much has happened, but I can't think of anything to write.

I spent the better part of the last two days learning about the UNL math department. They had a weekend of activities for prospective graduate students, so I found out most of the information I needed in order to make a decision of whether or not to attend UNL later. Well, most of the information. I still need to find out if I have any other options. When I do find out, I'll have a good grasp on how to compare them.

However, I do get really excited when I start talking about math. I can't wait to start doing some research in the area. I'm tired of architecture. I'm tired of design studio. I like my math courses, though. I wish I could get my thesis done enough to work on math more.

I guess I should just focus on the next few weeks, which are vital to the success of the rest of the semester.

Unprepared

Somehow, in my absolutely insane mind, I got the idea that both of my analysis courses had tests scheduled in the evening. Perhaps it was because the test days were scheduled back-to-back. However, when I showed up to class today expecting a review session, I was handed a test.

No News is Not Bad News

I would not agree that "No News is Good News" when it comes to my upcoming responses from graduate schools. However, it's been a while after UNL accepted me and I'm getting antsy about other responses.

One good thing about the delay, however, is that they didn't immediately throw me aside and reject completely. With any luck, they'll wait until late April to tell me. Then, I'll know I was just not good enough, instead of too horrible to consider. The later I get rejections, the less I "wasted" time on applications.

Laundry Sucks

I hate doing laundry. I usually wait until the last possible moment, and then stretch my remaining clothing for another week. Putting the clothing away at the end is my leas favorite part. I wish I could enlist the unused cycles of household computers to fold them for me.

I Really Have Nothing to Say

...except that I'm a little burned out on so much math tonight. I could use a sleep, so I'll take one. Math will begin again in the morning.

Note: nothing about this post reflects any negativity towards mathematics. I simply have been up too late every night for too long, and need to sleep even though I have more math to do.

Wikipwned

Wikipedia is very good at distracting me when I'm supposed to be productive. Tonight, my topics were the history of the early church and unsolved problems.

Familiar Notes

Every time I go into the classroom for my recitation, there are notes across the blackboard that look familiar. They are from Deogun's CSE 924: Advanced Graph Algorithms, which I audited for a while last spring. It's a little scary how I can remember those details, but I like graph theory so much, I guess it stuck for a while.

She-math

It comes to the time of year for another Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Math. In true male form, I'm showing up for technical support. I'll also watch some presentations and am particularly interested in the panel on getting research money in math.

And no, you won't get anything mildly entertaining this year.

Obviously Wrong Search

I was doing math homework in LaTeX and was writing in product notation. This notation uses a capital Π to act similar to Σ, but with multiplication instead of summation. However, I started writing \Pi, but realized it's better to use \prod, but forgot to delete the 'P' and got \Prod. When this generated an error, I didn't notice my mistake and decided to look up the product macro.

I was actually surprised when a Google search for latex product didn't give me the response I expected.
